Friedgen, The Baltimore Sun reported, was told by university officials he cannot coach the team next season.
Friedgen, who is in his 10th season, has been asked to retire but had not agreed to do so, the newspaper said. If he does not retire, Maryland can buy out the final season of his close to $2 million-a-year contract.
Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson was expected to hold a news conference regarding the football program at 3 p.m. ET on Monday.
Friedgen intends to coach the Terps in the Military Bowl Presented By Northrup Grumman on Dec. 29, The Sun reported.
At a meeting with the Maryland coaching staff on Saturday evening, Anderson said their contracts would be honored, sources told ESPN's Joe Schad.
Friedgen has told recruits on campus for visits he does not expect to return as coach, sources said.
Friedgen was named the Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year after his team finished 8-4 this season. The Terrapins were 2-10 in 2009.
He has a 74-50 record in 10 seasons at his alma mater. This is will be Maryland's seventh bowl bid since his arrival, and it remains unclear whether he will be on the sideline for the Terps' bowl game against East Carolina, at Washington's RFK Stadium.
Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is a likely target of Maryland's coaching search, The Sun reported.
