Origins of Our State Names


1. How many of our 48 contiguous states have names derived from Native Americans?
2. Seven of our states have origins in this language.
3. Referring to question No. 2, name the seven states.
4. Not to be outdone, the French have also contributed to the naming of some states. Name these states.

    2. The Spanish language has influenced the naming of seven states.

    3. The seven states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Nevada and New Mexico.

    4. Louisiana was named in honor of the French King Louis XIV. In French, Vermont ("vert mont") means "green mountain."

    5. This motto may come from the word "Texas," which is an Indian word that means friend.

    6. The state of Rhode Island takes its name from the Greek Island of Rhodes.

    7. Alabama is the only state with all the major natural resources needed to make iron and steel.

    8. Hawaii was once run by a monarchy.

    9. Chicago's Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower) is the tallest U.S. building.

    10. Hawaii and New Mexico are known to be bilingual.

    NOTE: Arizona may have derived its name from both Spanish and Indian influences. Some believe the name to come from arida zona, meaning "dry region."
