According to one legend, in the past the US Navy served wine on board its ships. But that stopped when Admiral Josephus Daniels became Secretary of the Navy. Admiral "Joe" banned wine from the officer's mess, except on special occasions. Peeved sailors began to sarcastically refer to their coffee, one of the few drinks permitted, as a "cup of Joe.".
