Five, Four, Three, Two, One ... Zero
'Five second' rule on dropped food unsafe
CHICAGO (UPI) -- The "five second" rule that says quickly retrieved dropped food is all right to eat should be a "zero second" rule because of bacteria, food scientists say. Clemson University food scientist Paul Dawson found that salmonella and other dangerous bacteria can remain alive up to four weeks on dry surfaces -- like floors -- and can be instantly transferred to dropped food, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday. Location, not time, is the critical factor, researchers say. Brushing off a bagel you dropped on the sidewalk and eating it is probably safe because the pavement is cleaner than a kitchen floor in terms of the kinds of bacteria found there, Dr. Harley Rotbart, a professor of microbiology and pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Colorado, said. "The kitchen floor, however, is probably a zero-second zone because the bacteria from uncooked meat and chicken juices are more hazardous than the 'soil' bacteria outside," said Rotbart. Bathroom floors are also zero-second zones because they're "a great potential source of bacteria and shorter-lived viruses that can cause gastrointestinal illness if ingested," Rotbart said.

What Else Grew?
When did pinball machines first become popular?
The pinball machine was one of the few successful industries that grew out of the Depression in the United States. The early models typically charged 5 cents for 10 balls, did not have side flippers, and the player had to add up his own score. Because it offered inexpensive and interactive entertainment value, the pinball machine remained popular for decades, until the advent of electronic video games.

Do You Hide Your Clitty?
If you have dark hair on your face, don't shave it! It doesn't grow in thicker, as many think, but it feels like it does as the shaved ends are coarser. In-home waxing can be painful, and salon waxing or hair removal tend to get pricey (especially the latter). Many women are better off simply lightening the hair to make it less visible.

What Fades In Six Weeks?
Didn't choose your color so well? if you've done a home dye job with semipermanent color, use dandruff or clarifying shampoo to strip out the color (the exact reason you're often told not to use it!).
Semipermanent color takes about 48 hours to set, so make sure you shampoo in that time. If not, it should fade in 6-8 weeks.
What Part?
Health and Beauty Tip -- Doing Your Part ...
... in your hair, that is. If you have a long or oval face, a side part works best -- line it up with arch in your eybrow. Round or square faces can be made to appear longer with a middle part, and prominent foreheads or chins appear smaller with a part that's just slightly off-center. Make sure to part your hair while it's wet, so it dries in place.

Cleaning My Tools
Make sure your makeup brushes and tools are always clean -- it ensures maximum performance and reduces the likeliness of blemishes. First, hold them under warm, running water (soaking them may loosen the glue that holds them together). Using the soap of your choice, lather them up and rub gently to remove makeup and dirt. Rinse out all the soap, and allow to air-dry overnight.

Because of their acute sense of smell, dogs are trained to sniff out everything from drugs to bombs to iron ore. In Ontario, Canada, instruments couldn't locate where natural gas was escaping from a pipeline buried 18 feet underground. Trained German shepherds were brought in. The dogs worked in sub-zero temperatures and covered nearly 100 miles of frozen ground, ultimately finding more than 150 gas leaks

City plans two more street urinals
VICTORIA, British Columbia (UPI) -- Officials in the capital of British Columbia said the Canadian city's first street urinal may soon be joined by two more, including one for women. Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin said the urinal, installed in September at the intersection of Government Street and Pandora Avenue, has been successful in helping to curb public urination after bars close and officials are looking to add two more street urinals to the city's arsenal, the Victoria Times Colonist reported Thursday. Fortin said at least one of the new urinals is to be modified for use by women, including adding a gate to the green steel poles surrounding the urinal for added privacy. "We do have to reflect the comments of so many women, which was either you put a gate on it or I'm not going to use it," Fortin said.

Which muscle is longest?
The longest muscle in the human body is the sartorius. This narrow muscle of the thigh passes obliquely across the front of the thigh and helps rotate the leg to the position assumed in sitting cross-legged. Its name is a derivation of the adjective "sartorial," a reference to what was the traditional cross-legged position of tailors (or "sartors") at work.

Health and Beauty Tip -- Alternative to Toner
If you're not satisfied with your toner, or want to try something different, use lemon juice instead. Its natural disinfecting and cleaning properties are popular with models, and is a refreshing alternative to other toners. Make sure you don't have any lemon or citrus allergies first.

Doodling elevates creative thinking
OAK BROOK, Ill. (UPI) -- Doodling is thinking in disguise that elevates creative thinking and is often used to achieve breakthrough ideas, a U.S. doodling expert says.
Sunni Brown -- self-proclaimed leader of the Doodle Revolution and author of the book "Gamestorming: A Playbook for Rule-breakers, Innovators and Changemakers" -- says the doodle on a student's homework may not be an absent-minded distraction. Many of the world's leading innovations -- from the light bulb to the telephone -- began with use of simple visual language, or doodling, Brown says.
Doodling shouldn't be confused with daydreaming, Brown says. It can jump-start memory and increase concentration and focus, so teachers and parents shouldn't discourage doodling in learning environments -- although attentive, intentional listening should be an integral part of the process.
"Doodling can actually be a successful multi-modal learning exercise," Brown says in a statement. "So it's OK when a review of 'Romeo and Juliet' in English class, for example, might get played out via a doodle in students' notes. The graphic, visual representation can actually help with recall and memory."

Did You Say Somehting About Whiskers?
How many whiskers does a walrus have?
A walrus has about 400 to 700 vibrissae, or whiskers, in 13 to 15 rows on its snout. Vibrissae are attached to muscles and are supplied with blood and nerves. A walrus moves its snout through bottom sediment to find food. Abrasion patterns created by their tusks show that they are dragged through the sediment, but are not used to dig up prey.
