We create blogs to share information and conversation. But as Scott points out in his article, sometimes we are unknowingly squashing the conversation before it has even begun by either not allowing or limiting commenting on our blogs.
Scott suggests opening up your blog to anyone who wants to comment, -- which I have done -- not just others who use the same blogging platform. If you're worried about spammers, you can always manually approve comments or install spam-blocking tools like a captcha.
