Joseph H. Michaud left behind a key piece of evidence after holding up the Walgreens pharmacy in Norwich on March 8, according to court testimony.
Police who were investigating the robbery found a jacket near the crime scene with a letter, addressed to Michaud, in one of the pockets.
Prosecutor Lawrence J. Tytla recited the facts of Michaud's case when Michaud pleaded guilty Wednesday in New London Superior Court to second-degree robbery.
Michaud went into the West Main Street pharmacy at midnight wearing a black ski mask, according to Tytla. He indicated he had a gun in his right pocket and demanded that the clerk open the register and give him all the $20 bills inside.
After arriving at the crime scene, police found the jacket nearby, Tytla said. They went to his apartment, but he was not home. He turned himself in the next morning, saying he had spent the $240 from the robbery on crack cocaine and slept in the woods, Tytla said.
Michaud, who is 43, will be sentenced on April 18 to five years in prison followed by three years of special parole.
