Star Struck!

If you buy a new printer (or a printer/scanner combo device), it will probably ship with some old software--the most basic drivers that a Mac or Windows computer needs to use for the device’s features. Most manufacturers don’t seem to update the CD or DVD in a printer’s box with the latest drivers; when users install the software on that disc, they can run into minor and major glitches. At worst, the printer may not be usable at all; some older printer drivers don’t work in Windows Vista.
To fix this, throw out the CD and go to the printer manufacturer’s Web site for the latest versions. If more than one download is available for your operating system, go with the smaller one--the bigger, “full feature” files that some vendors provide often include extra programs you don’t need.
